The government have announced that people living in the UK without any immigration status will be able to have the COVID-19 vaccine without being subject to immigration checks.
The announcement comes as part of the government’s attempts to vaccinate as many people as possible across the UK. Charities and organisations that work with people who are concerned about their immigration status, will be asked to urge them to seek a vaccination.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the government announced that immigration checks would be put on hold for anyone seeking a test or treatment for coronavirus, these principals are now being applied to vaccinations.
A spokesperson for the government said:
“Those registered with a GP (General Practitioner) are being contacted at the earliest opportunity and we are working closely with partners and external organisations to contact those who are not registered with a GP to ensure they are also offered the vaccine.”
The vaccine will be free, regardless of an individuals immigration status and it’s hoped that the new announcement will encourage undocumented migrants, who would usually be too fearful to seek medical treatment, to received that vaccine and help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
