Applying for a Tier 2 ICT Visa extension
If you have been living in the UK under the Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer category of the points-based system, you can extend your visa. A Tier 2 ICT Visa allows you to stay in the UK for three years. Once this period has elapsed, you can apply for an extension of up to 2 years.
Extending your ICT Visa is a good option for people who want to continue to work in the UK branch of their business for a further period. Once an Intra-Company Transfer Visa has been extended, it cannot be extended again. The maximum number of years a person can live in the UK under this form of entry clearance is 5 years.
Our expert immigration lawyers can help you if you want to apply for a Tier 2 Visa extension. They will assess your circumstances and advise you on the requirements and application process for this form of visa renewal. They can also oversee your entire application for you. Intra-company Transfer Visa extension requirements
You may be eligible to extend your stay in the UK under this form of Tier 2 Visa, if you have either category of the following Intra-company Transfer Visas:
- Long-term staff
- Graduate trainee
If you are living in the UK under either of these Tier 2 ICT Visa types, you can renew your visa if you also:
- Have the same/a similar job as the role you held when your first visa was granted
- Still work for the same employer (the one who is listed on your Certificate of Sponsorship)
- Still earn what is considered an ‘appropriate salary’ (this varies depending on the role and whether it is classed as an ‘in shortage’ position or not)
- Are in the UK
ICT Visa extension documents
When you apply to extend a Tier 2 Visa under the ICT category, you need to submit the following documents along with your application forms:
- Your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number
- A bank statement that shows you have enough savings to support yourself (unless your sponsor is funding you and you can demonstrate this)
- Your current passport/travel document (you will also need to have a bank page in your passport)
- Any expired passports/travel documents you hold to demonstrate your travel history
- Your TB test results if you are a national of a ‘listed country’
If your documents are not already written in either English or Welsh, please note that you need to have them translated. This translated version needs to be certified which means it must be signed and dated as a true copy by a professional person, like a lawyer.
Length of stay
You can extend your Long-term Staff ICT Visa for whichever is the shortest period of either:
- The time that is given on your Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days extra
- The time needed to extend your stay to the maximum amount of time allowed in the Tier 1 ICT category
- Five years
You can only extend your Graduate Trainee ICT Visa if your original visa was issued for less than 12 months. If this is the case, you can extend it up to the full 12 months.
Application processing times
Decisions on a Tier 2 Intra Company Transfer renewal usually take around eight weeks from the application date.
If you are using the priority service, you can expect to receive a decision on your application within five working days after the date of your UKVCAS appointment.
You can also use a super-priority service for this type of visa extension. If you do this, the application processing time is reduced even more. If you opt for this service, you can expect a decision for the next working day after your UKVCAS appointment.
Extension application process
You must apply on like for a Tier 2 Intra-company Transfer Visa extension.
When you make an application, you should complete the Tier 2 Work application form and submit this alongside your supporting documents.
You will also need to have your biometric information reviewed and updated. This can be done at a visa application centre.

No, you are not able to switch jobs on this Tier 2 Work Visa category. This is because, by definition of the ICT category, you must have worked for the company in question for at least a year in order to remain eligible under the Intra-company Transfer category. You could not have done this if you had been in the UK working for another company.
First, you must make an application for an extension online and from within the UK. Secondly, you must have a new CoS issued by your employer to confirm that you will be able to continue on completing the same job for the same sponsor (employer) if your request for a visa renewal is granted.
You can apply for an extension within three months of your new Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) being assigned or 60 days before your current leave is set to expire – whichever is sooner.
No, it is not possible to switch between these visas, as this would mean no longer working for the employer on your CoS.
To work at a new UK company you would need to make a fresh application as a general worker under this visa tier category.
