Passport Validity for Travel

A valid passport is not only a requirement for travelling abroad, it is also a very important official document proving the holder’s citizenship and national identity. Unlike most other government-issued documents, passports usually come with a validity expiry date, and must be renewed within a stipulated time frame.

Most countries in the world require a passport valid for at least the entire duration of your travel before issuing a visa. The validity requirement can be up to six months, or even longer in case of specific visas. Respective immigration and border control officers will check your passport’s validity among other details at the time of entry even if you are a visa-exempt country national.

So, if you are planning to travel abroad for holidays, to meet your family or friends, or even for a work or business trip, you must check for how long your current passport is valid. At the same time, thoroughly review the visa/entry regulations for your destination country to make sure your passport is going to be valid for the required time frame.

Likewise, ensure your passport is in a good condition, and not damaged or disfigured in any way whatsoever. A damaged passport is a valid reason for the immigration control officers to refuse you entry at the border. In case your UK passport is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to apply for a replacement passport before you can travel abroad.

Passport validity requirements vary from country to country when it comes to issuing visas to foreign nationals (or allowing visa-exempt foreign nationals to enter their soils). Having said that, we must also note that countries in a certain geographical location often have similarities among their passport validity requirements.

Take Europe. Following Brexit (i.e., Britain’s exit from the European Union), UK passport holders need to meet the entry requirements the EU and Schengen countries have for other ‘third-country nationals’. These include a passport which is valid for at least three months after their date of return from the concerned EU country. Plus, the passport must have been issued less than 10 years prior to the UK national’s departure date.

Here lies the tricky part. Passports issued to UK citizens before September 2018 usually come with a validity of up to 10 years and nine months (those nine months added from the previous passport). So, even after 10 years, such passports will be technically valid for another nine months for travelling abroad. However, you will not be able to use such a passport for travelling to Europe because of the 10-year rule for EU and Schengen countries as mentioned above.

Likewise, immigration policies of most Asian countries mandate a passport to be valid for at least six months for visa/entry purposes.

As explained so far, different countries have different passport validity requirements for issuing visas/allowing entry to foreign nationals. We recommend that to avoid any visa issues while you are travelling, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months.

If you get caught in a passport validity-related situation while travelling abroad, the relevant British embassy, consulate or high commission can issue you with Emergency Travel Documents (ETD) instead to replace passports not meeting the required validity. However, note that some countries may require a valid visa for those with ETDs even if you are otherwise visa-exempt, while countries like Myanmar and Laos will not accept ETDs in place of passports.

You must also ensure that people traveling with you have the required passport validity. It is more common than you think to overlook the validity requirement when it comes to children’s passports. Given that the passport of your child expires in five years compared to 10 years for an adult passport, you must be extra careful while making your travel plans if it involves child travellers.

Most Asian countries require six-month validity for passports. Japan is an exception as they do not have the six-month rule. However, your UK passport must remain valid for the entire duration of your travel/stay in the country.

Among other popular destinations for UK leisure and business travellers, the US and Canada mandate that your passport remain valid for your entire stay. So, having at least six-month validity may be a good idea. If you are planning for a trip down under, Australia requires six-month validity while New Zealand mandates that your UK passport remain valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date.

Here’s a checklist from the legal and immigration standpoint if you are planning to travel abroad from the UK.

• Check the ‘foreign travel advice’ page and find out the immigration requirements for your destination country, including any other pertinent recommendations from the Home Office for that country/region
• Make sure the passports of all travellers (including children, if any) meet the validity requirements and are not damaged in any way
• Check if you will need a visa to enter your destination country
• Get travel insurance to cover any emergency and medical costs while travelling abroad
• Check what documents you will need if you are planning to drive in your destination country
• Check the documents you will need if your pet(s) is travelling with you
