What Are the UK Visas for Kenyans?

There are many different visas for Kenyans in the UK. The type of visa you’ll need will depend on the purpose of your visit. For example, if you’re going to the UK for a short holiday, you’ll need a tourist visa. If you’re planning to study in the UK, you’ll need a student visa.
The most common type of visa for Kenyan nationals is skilled work visas, which allow Kenyan citizens to work in the UK. Other types of UK visas for Kenyans include student, family, and visitor visas.

Kenyan nationals can apply for a work visa if offered a job in the UK. To apply for a work visa, Kenyan citizens must have a valid passport and a job offer from a UK employer.

To apply for a student visa, Kenyan nationals must have been offered a place on a course of study at a UK educational institution. Kenyan students must also prove that they have the finances to support themselves during their studies in the UK.

Family visas are available for Kenyan citizens married to a British citizen or person with settled status in the UK. Kenyan citizens can also apply for a family visa if they are the parent or grandparent of a British citizen or a person with settled status in the UK.

A tourist visa is available for Kenyan citizens who wish to visit the UK for business, pleasure, or to transit through the UK. Kenyan visitors must have a valid passport and prove they have enough money in their bank account to support their moving costs and stay in the UK.

Kenyan visitors must also have a return ticket to Kenya or an onward journey ticket out of the UK. Your Visa type determines a lot in terms of visa application and the time you’ll stay in the UK. Some may need a national insurance number, and if you are moving with personal effects to other countries may need customs clearance.

It’s important to make sure you apply for the right type of visa, as applying for the wrong one could delay your application or result in it being rejected. So it’s important to know how to apply for UK visa in Kenya.

UK Working Visas for Kenyan Citizens

If you are a Kenyan citizen, you can apply for the UK working visa. This will allow you to work in the UK on a valid work visa and return to Kenya after the visa expires. Obtaining this visa is fairly simple, but you will need at least three months of employment in the UK before applying.

Also, you must provide proof of your qualifications and experience and that you have paid all necessary taxes.

The process can be completed within a month or two, depending on how quickly your employer needs someone. If you do not wish to wait until your visa expires before returning home, we recommend you consider applying for a British passport instead of a working visa.

    UK Spouse Visa for Kenyans

A UK spouse visa is also known as a UK marriage visa. This visa enables married partners of the UK to come to the UK. This is because they are married to someone who is “established in the UK”—that is, someone who is typically permanent in the UK and has no immigration limits on the length of their stay.

How much time does a spouse visa last?

Whether it was issued within or outside the UK will determine the answer. It has a 30-month validity period. If it was issued while you were a resident or visitor of the UK, it has a 30-month validity period. If the visa was granted while you were travelling abroad, its duration is 33 months.

You can request an extension after 33 months, extending your stay in the UK to five years. A permit for indefinite stay can be applied for once your spouse’s visa validates for five years.

What conditions must be met for a spouse visa in the UK?

The following criteria must be satisfied to be eligible for a UK spouse visa:

    • To prevent planned marriages, you both must have met and be legitimately wed.
    • You both need to be at least 18 years old.
    • You must want to live together long-term.
    • Your sponsoring partner must be financially secure or have an annual income of more than £18,600 to sponsor you. Applicants must have a higher minimum financial requirement if they also intend to sponsor dependent children.
    • You must be financially self-sufficient enough to care for yourself without requesting government assistance.
    • The English language requirements must be met.
    • You, your spouse, and any dependents must all be able to live comfortably.

Can my spouse’s visa be extended?

You can apply for a 30-month extension, extending your stay in the UK on this visa to a maximum of five years. If you are still married, residing in the UK with your spouse, and continuing to pay the required maintenance, you may now apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). You can be qualified to apply for naturalization as a British citizen after receiving ILR.

Kenyan Entrepreneurs Travelling to the UK

Entrepreneurs from Kenya who want to visit the UK can apply for a Tier 1 Visa as “high-value migrants.” The following licenses fall under this category:

    • Tier 1 (Investor): Interested Kenyan investors must have access to at least £2,000,000 invested in the UK to qualify for this permit.
    • Global Talent Visa: For professionals in a particular industry (such as science, medicine, or the arts) who are acknowledged as world leaders in their field.
    • There is a start-up visa for those who want to launch their first business in the UK. Although no minimum investment is needed, candidates must show they have a high level of potential.

How to Apply for a Permanent Residence in the UK as a Kenyan

If you meet certain UK visa requirements for Kenyans, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK and acquire permanent residency in the UK.

If your application is accepted, you can live in the UK without facing any immigration limitations. However, you cannot vote or possess a UK passport until you apply for and are granted British citizenship.

What Kenyans need to apply for residency in the UK:

    • In any 12 months, you must have spent no more than 180 days abroad.
    • You must have resided lawfully in the UK for at least five years.
    • You must demonstrate your command of the English language and your familiarity with British culture.

IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is an English language test required as part of the visa application process for certain types of visas.

The IELTS test assesses your language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The UK government recognizes it as a reliable and valid way to assess your language skills.

IELTS for UKVI is different to the standard IELTS test as it is specifically designed to meet the needs of UK visa applicants. The test focuses on the four skills required for life in the UK: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
