London’s Businesses Hit by Lack of Skilled Workers

Sadiq Khan is set to use his annual speech at Mansion House to call for London to be given greater flexibility in attracting skilled workers from overseas.

Following Brexit, he believes the city’s hospitality and construction sectors have been hit hard by a loss of more than 80,000 EU workers and remain unable to fill key vacancies.

Regional Immigration Could Solve Industry Problems

At present, the Migration Advisory Committee decides which professions are included on the Shortage Occupation List based on the UK resident labour market as a whole. There are no regional variations taken into account when adding roles to the list.

Any professions added to the Shortage Occupation List are eligible for greater flexibility when it comes to visa applications – in a bid to ensure the UK can fulfil vacant posts.

However, Mr Khan believes being able to introduce local immigration rules could help to reduce the impact on investment and productivity in the specific regions which have been hit the hardest by immigration changes.

Seven in 10 London Businesses Concerned About Skills Shortages

Mr Khan is expected to say: “The number of businesses in our city experiencing at least one skills shortage has now risen to almost seven in 10.

“Devolving powers to London and allowing us to create a regional shortage occupation list would be one way to give businesses the ability to attract and retain talent in the areas they need it most.”
