British citizenship and nationality fees
A UK citizenship application is usually costly, currently the British citizenship fee is £1130. However, you will also incur other costs throughout the application. The total cost of applying for citizenship will vary on a case by case basis but there are many hidden fees that can greatly increase the total cost of applying.
Whilst the £80 British citizenship ceremony fee is including in the £1130 application fee, other fees that you can expect to incur in the citizenship process include the cost of meeting the requirements such as taking the Life in the UK Test and the English language test, and the fee for collecting your biometric information.
Overall, you should be aware of the following fees before you make your application:
- British citizenship application fee (this includes the £80 British citizenship ceremony fee which includes the administration of a citizenship oath and pledge) – £1130
- Biometric appointment fee – £19.20
- Life in the UK Test fee – £50
- English language test fee (only required for citizens of certain countries) – £150
If you have already taken the Life in the UK Test and English language test as part of your Indefinite Leave to Remain application then you will not need to pay to take these tests again.
As well as the above fees there are a few other costs associated with the applying for citizenship. If your documents are not written in English then you will need to pay to have them professionally translated. The cost of this varies depending on how many documents you need translating but can often be upward of £180.
The British citizenship application process if also incredibly complex and is difficult to go through alone, to increase your chances of success it is highly recommended that you seek the assistance of an immigration lawyer. The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies depending on which services you will need to use and it can be expensive, however hiring a lawyer could actually save you money by increasing your chances of success, and decreasing your chances of having to to apply for a second time or spend money appealing a refusal.

Registering as a British citizen is a different process to applying for citizenship and thus there are different costs involved. Usually, only children under the age of 18 are eligible to register for citizenship.
The cost for a child to register as a British citizen is lower than the naturalisation application fee, but is still a considerable amount at £1012. If the child turns 18 during the application process then they will also be required to pay an additional £80 British citizenship ceremony fee.
Children who are born in the UK can be eligible to register as a British citizen as soon as their parents acquire Indefinite Leave to Remain or another form of settled status. Children who are born outside the UK may be eligible to register as a British citizen if they have at least one British parent or if they have lived in the UK for over 10 years.
Registration fees for a British overseas territory citizen and other types of British nationals
In some circumstances, adults can be eligible to register for British citizenship, this includes if they have another form of British nationality (such as British overseas nationals or British overseas territories citizens), if they have a connection with Gibraltar or Hong Kong, or if they have a British mother or father and had the right to become a British citizen when they were born.
It usually costs £1206 for an adult to register as a British citizen but British overseas territory citizens, British overseas citizens, British Subjects and British protected persons can register for British nationality for £901.
British overseas territory citizens have the right to a British passport and also the right to receive diplomatic protection, however overseas territory citizens are still subject to immigration control and do not have an automatic right to live and work in the UK. In order to no longer be subject to immigration control a British overseas territory citizen would need to apply to naturalise as a British citizen.
British overseas territories citizens could be eligible for naturalisation if they became a British overseas territories citizen after 21 May 2002 and meet certain conditions. The cost of naturalising for British overseas territories citizens is £1000.
