Requirements for Global Talent Endorsement Application
Overview
There are some standard requirements for applying for a Global Talent visa endorsement. This means you must submit your application online by completing the “Apply for Global Talent endorsement – stage 1” form.
You also must have paid the application fee and have made an application for endorsement from an endorsing body that is relevant to your field. Failure to meet these requirements will render your application invalid and result in rejection.
There is also a range of Global Talent endorsement processes. Each of them has different requirements that you will need to meet to be successful. However, you will generally need to provide evidence to satisfy the endorsing body that you have exceptional talent or exceptional promise in your area of expertise.
- Significant media recognition as an individual or member of a group in more than one country
- Evidence of winning or contributing to winning an international award for excellence
- Evidence from at least two countries of your professional appearances. One of these countries can be your home country
There are similar international requirements for promising individuals. For example, you can have been nominated or shortlisted for, rather than won, an international award for excellence. You also only need significant media recognition in at least one country.
Architecture Endorsement
The architecture endorsement requirements are similar to those for arts and culture, requiring exceptionally talented individuals to have made substantial contributions internationally and promising individuals to make contributions in one country. The professional engagement must also have been for at least five years.
You’ll also need three dated letters or recommendations, two of which must be from architecture organisations with which you have completed architecture work. The organisation needs to be of high standing.
Individuals with exceptional talent need to show the international nature of their work by providing at least two of the following:
- An international award for excellence
- Evidence from at least two countries of at least two examples of significant media recognition for your work
- Evidence from at least two countries of at least two examples of publications or exhibitions widely considered to be internationally significant
Similarly, eased international requirements for promising individuals in arts and culture apply to those in architecture. For example, you could show evidence of internationally significant publications or exhibitions in one country within the last five years.
You could also have been shortlisted for an award or had at least two examples of recent media recognition in one country.
Design Industry Endorsement
The design industry endorsement requirements are also incredibly similar. This includes letters of recommendation and evidence of international work for both promising individuals and those with exceptional talent in the design industry.
One substantial difference is that both the arts and culture and architecture endorsement applications allow you to show the international significance of your work through being involved in its creation. However, the design industry endorsement application also allows for individuals involved in international distribution and sales.
Fashion Industry Endorsement
Showing exceptional talent in the fashion industry requires you to have produced outstanding work, sold internationally or exhibited internationally through catwalk shows in at least two countries. The same requirement applies for exceptional promise, except that you can have had catwalk appearances of your work in just one country. For both routes, you need to either own or have a leading role in a noteworthy fashion business.
Another slight difference comes when showing the international nature of your work. This still requires two pieces of evidence. However, there is an additional requirement for evidence of extensive international distribution and sales of your work, either through internationally renowned retailers or your company’s retail outlets and ecommerce platforms.
There are also differences in the ways that you show exceptional promise. You’ll need to provide at least two of the following:
- Examples of two or more pieces of recent UK or international media recognition for your work as an individual or contributing designer
- Proof of one or more orders placed by a luxury retailer or boutique
- At least two examples of recognition from leading lights in the industry
- Evidence that you have support or sponsorship from eligible bodies
Support and sponsorship can come from the British Fashion Council, Fashion East’s support schemes, the Sarabande Foundation, or the Centre of Fashion. You can also get support from an international organisation that the British Fashion Council considers to be its counterpart.
Film and Television Endorsement
The requirements for a film and television endorsement application include needing to show that you have won a “main award” for your work at any time. Examples include an Academy Award, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award, a Golden Globe, or an Emmy Award.
The requirement can also be reduced to a contribution to winning or being nominated for a ‘Main Award’ in the last ten years, or being nominated as an individual in the last ten years. The applicant may also have been nominated for a ‘main award’ on two separate occasions for their individual work over the past 15 years.
These requirements are waived if you have achieved notable industry recognition for at least two separate productions. This can be shown through significant distribution and sales, media recognition, or receiving specific awards.
You will also need to provide your CV and at least three dated letters of recommendation.
Digital Technology Endorsement
The digital technology endorsement application process is available to individuals with exceptional talent or promise as technical applicants. This means that you have expertise in using the latest technologies to build, use, and deploy technological infrastructure.
Business applicants with proof of commercial investment, leadership, or product expertise in building technological products can also apply.
Three letters of recommendation are required from well-established individuals with an intimate knowledge of your work over a period of 12 months or more. The information inside the letter should include:
- How the individual knows you
- Your achievements in your field
- The reasons the writer thinks you have exceptional talent or promise
- The contribution they expect you to make to the UK economy
To show you have exceptional talent, you’ll need to provide evidence of at least two of the following:
- A track record as an innovative tech founder or senior executive, or as an employee working in an emergent field
- Recognition that your work contributes to the advancement of your field
- You have made significant technical, commercial, or entrepreneurial contributions
- Your academic contributions have shown exceptional quality
Showing exceptional promise requires you to be in the early stages of your career. You must also show two of the above, needed for exceptionally talented individuals.
However, the Home Office is a little bit more lenient. For example, you can demonstrate innovation as a founder without a longstanding track record of such contributions.
All applicants should provide evidence of any commercially successful businesses they’ve been involved in. You should also show evidence of share ownership or businesses that have been dissolved in the last five years for which you were a founder or senior executive.
Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Science and Medicine Fields Endorsement
This endorsement application category has the simplest criteria. You need to show that you are an active researcher in the fields of science, engineering, the humanities, social science, or medicine. This work needs to have been for an industry, government, or academic research institution.
Fast Track Endorsement
There are three pathways to this endorsement. Firstly, they can hold or have held a peer-reviewed research fellowship or award. The award or position needs to be on the list published by the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Academy.
They may also have been appointed to an eligible academic or research position approved by the UK Higher Education Institution, or to a position on the list published by the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the British Academy.
They’ll also need to provide a job description demonstrating that the position requires a PhD or equivalent experience.
A statement of guarantee from the institution’s director of human resources is also needed, showing the following:
- The job was properly advertised
- An open competition for the position was held, or there is a legitimate reason it was not
- The role requires a PhD or equivalent experience
- You will be performing research or innovation as your primary function
- You provided at least two references
- Three or more academic, research or innovation representatives sat on your interview panel
- At least one expert in your field was on the panel or at least one external expert was consulted
Another pathway is to come to the UK to be hosted or employed by a UK-based research organisation. The institution must be named on the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) published list.
While in this position, you must do work that provides critical contributions supported by a substantial research grant or an award from one of the endorsed funders. The grant or award must be worth at least £30,000 over at least two years, or fund the work as a one-off, awarded through an open competition.
Finally, the funding can be an institutional, renewable award based on periodic peer review.
If you will be directly, independently, or under the direct supervision of a Principal Investigator, conducting a research or innovation project, you must:
- Hold a relevant PhD or equivalent research experience
- Actively participate in a relevant field in a university, research institute or industry
- Have your name listed as the principal or co-investigator, or you will hold a similar position approved by UKRI
- Contribute to the research through your excellence
Alternatively, you can make a critical contribution to research by demonstrating excellence or by developing new technologies and methodologies. In this case, you must hold a UK bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) or the equivalent research expertise, and have research experience in a university, research institute or industry.
The third pathway also requires a letter from the institution’s director of human resources, with many of the same requirements as the second pathway. The letter must also confirm that at least 1 year remains on your employment contract and that you are essential to the execution of the grant or award (and at that at least 50% of your time is spent working on it).
Full Peer Review Endorsement
Peer review endorsement applies to those working in the science, engineering, humanities, social science, or medicine fields. Exceptional talent will require you to be an active researcher and to have a PhD or equivalent research experience. You can also access this endorsement type through exceptional promise, which shows you are at an early stage in your career.
Both types of full peer review endorsement applications require a letter of personal recommendation. This must have been provided by an eminent person in your field who is based in the UK. Make sure that the letter includes:
- How does the person know you
- Your achievements in your field
- Why does the person think you have exceptional talent and promise
- The contributions they would expect you to make to British research and society
A further letter from an eminent person is required if you are applying on the basis of your exceptional talent. Make sure it includes the above, as well as confirmation that they are a senior member of a UK organisation related to your field.
The statement should also confirm that they are providing an objective assessment of your capabilities, regardless of any personal relationship they may have with you.
Endorsing Bodies: Who Can Endorse a Global Talent Visa
You will make your endorsement application to one of the recognised endorsing bodies. These endorsing bodies are:
- Arts Council England: arts and culture, plus fashion, film, television, and architecture
- Tech Nation: digital technology fields for both technologists and businesspeople
- The Royal Society: natural and medical sciences
- Royal Academy of Engineering
- British Academy: humanities and social sciences
- UKRI: science, research and innovation
Please note that Arts Council England has a range of sub-organisations. Your case will be linked to whichever one is relevant.
Examples of these sub-organisations include the British Fashion Council, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT).
Understanding which endorsing body your application will be sent to can be challenging.

Frequently Asked Questions
The UK Government has counted 17,012 endorsement applications between April 2020 and April 2023. 12,243 of these individuals received a Global Talent visa, a success rate of around 72%.
Endorsed applicants for the visa have a roughly 99% application success rate. That means the vast majority of refusals occurred during the endorsement decision phase, indicating that securing the right endorsement is the main barrier.
Top-tier awards like the Oscars and the Nobel Prize will allow you to skip the endorsement process altogether. However, certain lesser international awards can help you to get an endorsement. These awards will usually need to be recognised by the appropriate British institution for your field.
If the endorsing body does not think you are among the exceptionally talented and promising individuals, they will reject your endorsement application. If you believe you are eligible, you have two options.
Firstly, you can request an endorsement review within 28 days of receiving your refusal email if you think administrative errors were made.
You’ll need to fill out the endorsement review form and email it to globaltalentendorsements@homeoffice.gov.uk. Different officials will review your existing application, and you won’t be able to add further documentation or evidence.
However, if you realise the rejection was due to errors in the application process, it is usually best to submit a new endorsement application after fixing the issues. You’ll need to pay the full endorsement fee again for your application to be considered.
