Can I Renew My British Tourist Visa Before It Expires?
UK Tourist Visas are designed for visa holders to visit the country for up to six months for leisure purposes – and may not be renewed. However, there is nothing stopping an applicant who has had a UK Tourist Visa previously (and since left the UK) in applying for a new one for a future trip.
When applying for a new Tourist Visa, it should be noted that the application will be judged on its own merits, without influence from the original visa application. However, the presence of having been granted a Tourist Visa and being able to prove that the applicant has not overstayed is only positive and will contribute to the likelihood of the extension being approved.
Can I Extend My UK Tourist Visa?
Overview
There are some rare circumstances in which the holder of a UK tourist visa can extend it before their current visa expires. These are:
- Where the initial Tourist Visa is granted for a period of less than six months; AND
- The extension will extend the validity of the current visa to no longer than six months
If looking to extend a Tourist Visa beyond a period of six months, the applicant must:
- Be a patient receiving emergency medical treatment in the UK; OR
- Be an academic and continue to meet the eligibility requirements of their current visa; OR
- Be a graduate retaking the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) test; OR
- Be a graduate completing a clinic attachment
Extending a Tourist Visa for Up To Six Months
If a visa holder has a Tourist Visa valid for any period less than six months, they may file a visa extension application to reach a maximum period of six months in the UK. The applicant will need to continue to meet the eligibility requirements that they did for the initial visa application and will have to pay a visa extension fee.
Extending a Tourist Visa for Medical Treatment
If a Tourist Visa holder is already in the UK and undergoing medical treatment, they may apply to extend their visa for an additional six months, providing that:
- They have paid for any medical treatment already undergone in the UK
- They have can and will pay the costs of any further medical treatment to be undergone in the UK
- They continue to meet the medical treatment eligibility requirements as in their initial visa application
The applicant will need to provide:
- Details of their medical condition that requires further treatment from a medical practitioner or NHS consultant registered in the UK
- (If receiving treatment under a reciprocal healthcare arrangement) An authorisation form from their home country’s government confirming that they will pay for the treatment
There is no limit to how many times a Tourist Visa may be extended for the visa holder to receive medical care, provided they file an extension application and pay the fee each time.
Extending a Tourist Visa as an Academic
Academics may apply to stay in the UK for up to 12 months, provided that the applicant can prove:
- They are highly qualified in their professional field of expertise (holding at least a PhD)
- They were working in that professional field of expertise at an academic institution overseas prior to your arrival in the UK
- They are not filling a permanent teaching post
- (If an Academic but not a senior doctor or dentist) They are visiting to do research or a formal exchange
- (If a senior doctor or dentist) They are visiting to do research, clinical practice, a formal exchange or to teach
Any partner or family members may apply for the same extension provided they continue to meet the eligibility requirements and pay the fee.
Extending a Tourist Visa to retake the PLAB test
Visa holders already in the UK may apply to extend their stay for up to an additional six month to retake the PLAB test, providing that:
- They can provide written confirmation from the General Medical Council of their test retake
If the PLAB test is passed, the visa holder may file an application to stay longer to do an unpaid clinical attachment or dental observer post; up to 18 months in total. They must provide written confirmation of:
- The clinical attachment offer
- Proof that they’ve not completed a clinical attachment in the UK before
- A declaration that they won’t be treating patients

How to Extend a UK Tourist Visa Before It Expires
It should be noted that the visa extension application process is not the same as the visa renewal application process. Provided the application is being filed before the current visa expires, the applicant should:
Ensure eligibility and collect supporting documents
Only certain visa categories allow for a UK visa extension. Applicants should ensure they are eligible and collect all evidential documents (as above, these vary dependent on visa categories) ahead of the extension application being made. Aside from the category dependent documents, applicants should supply:
- A valid passport
- Details of any updated travel plans; including the travel reserved or booked to leave the UK and accommodation options
- Details of any additional costs due to the updated travel plans
- Contact information of any people in the UK the applicant will visit or is already visiting
- Proof that they are able to financially support themselves for the extended duration of their trip in the UK
File online extension application form
Visa extensions are filed through an online service. The applicant must complete the online form wholly and accurately. Any incorrect information submitted may result in the visa holder being in the UK illegally (a criminal offence) which is likely to impact future UK immigration applications and result in the holder being refused re entry.
Pay visa extension fee
The visa extension fee must be paid online.
Await visa extension decision
Once a decision on extending the visa has been made, the applicant will be contacted by letter or email.
UK Tourist Visa Extension Fee and Processing Times
To extend a current UK visa before it expires, all parties must pay £1,172. This fee must be paid before the initial UK visa expires.
On average, it takes eight weeks from submission for extension decisions on UK visas. A Super Priority Service is available at an additional cost of £1000. This will confirm a decision within a maximum of two working days.
